In an extraordinary display of athleticism and quick thinking, Wellington fielder Troy Johnson stunned spectators with a remarkable act of fielding during a T20 Super Smash match at the Basin Reserve. This exceptional moment unfolded when Central opener Will Young aimed for a strong start in his team's chase.
Johnson, stationed at mid-on, showcased his agility and skills by chasing down Young’s lofted drive near the boundary. His initial catch, an over-the-shoulder grab, was impressive enough to make the highlights. However, what followed was truly exceptional. As Johnson's momentum threatened to carry him over the boundary line, the 26-year-old fielder ingeniously contorted his body and managed to throw the ball back into play, setting up teammate Nick Kelly to complete the catch and dismiss Young.
The umpires reviewed the play to confirm Johnson's feat, and replays verified that he had successfully avoided touching the boundary rope while in possession of the ball, making it a legal catch.

Despite Johnson’s remarkable effort, Wellington couldn't capitalize on the momentum. Central comfortably chased down Wellington’s target of 147/8, winning the match by six wickets. Central’s chase was spearheaded by opener Boyle, who struck a compelling half-century, his second at this level. The 27-year-old right-hander’s innings was adorned with ten boundaries, including a striking sequence of three consecutive fours off van Beek’s bowling in the fifth over.
This victory propelled the Stags from fourth to third on the Super Smash ladder, surpassing the Kings based on net run rate. Looking ahead, the Stags are set to continue their campaign, facing off against the second-placed Auckland team in their upcoming match on Tuesday. Johnson's incredible fielding effort, although not turning the game in Wellington’s favor, will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the highlights of the tournament.
