Bangladesh captain Litton Das has been kept in the dark over his team’s participation in the T20 World Cup 2026. Das admitted that there is uncertainty about which group Bangladesh will play in. He doesn't know which team to plan against as Bangladesh government has refused to send the team to India and want their matches in either Sri Lanka or some other country.
"If we had known who our group opponents were [in the World Cup] or which country we were going to, that would have helped," Das said after Rangpur Riders were knocked out of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2026.
"You have seen that we have announced the squad, but until now, no player knows which country we are going to or whom we will play against. Like me, the whole of Bangladesh is now uncertain."
A final decision on the batter is expected to be taken today. BCB had cited security reasons behind refusal to play their matches in India following Mustafizur Rahman's removal from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
"Are you sure that we are going to the World Cup?" he asked. "In reality, there is still a long time left before the World Cup, and we are not even sure whether we will go or not. No answer. I understand what question you are going to ask. That is not safe for me. No answer."
No political comment from Litton Das
However, Das distanced himself from politics and accepted the uncertainties Bangladesh players are facing of late.
"Many things in life are not ideal, but you have to accept them according to the situation," he said. "Playing so many matches in the BPL was not ideal either, but we still had to play."
Recent turmoil in Bangladesh cricket
Last week, recently-axed BCB director Nazmul Islam’s comments on Bangladesh players irked the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB). In response, they boycotted all cricket and demanded Nazmul’s resignation. They followed through with the threat and a day’s play in BPL was suspended. Later, BCB sacked Nazmul so that BPL can resume.
No switching groups with Ireland to play in Sri Lanka
Currently, Bangladesh are placed in Group C. Three of their matches are scheduled to take place at Eden Gardens, Kolkata whereas one is in Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. The BCB wants to switch groups with Ireland so that they can play their matches in Sri Lanka but the request has been denied. Cricket Ireland has been assured the same by the ICC.
