Abhishek Sharma is yet to recover from stomach issues

Abhishek Sharma’s availability for India’s next T20 World Cup 2026 fixture remains a point of concern. The explosive left-batter is not yet a guaranteed opener for the upcoming match against Namibia, which is set to take place on February 12. His status remains uncertain as the team management monitors his recovery ahead of the clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Abhishek Sharma to miss India vs Namibia T20 World Cup clash?

Providing an update on February 10, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed that Abhishek is still dealing with an ongoing illness. While the coaching staff remains hopeful that he will recover in time to feature in the starting XI, they are prepared to make a final call closer to game day. Should he be unable to play, India may be forced to reshuffle their top order for the crucial group-stage encounter.

“Abhi has still got a few issues with his tummy, but we are hopeful he will be available for the game in two days time," Doeschate told media.

Abhishek Sharma misses team practice

Abhishek’s absence from recent team practices has fueled speculation about his availability for the upcoming clash with Namibia. Should he be ruled out of the starting eleven, Sanju Samson is viewed as the most natural replacement. While Samson was previously India's preferred opener, a string of low scores during the South Africa series saw him lose his spot to Ishan Kishan; however, his experience at the top of the order remains a valuable contingency.

Alternatively, the team management could consider a more tactical move by promoting Washington Sundar. This "left-field" option would be particularly attractive if India feels the need for an extra spin cushion on the Delhi track. Sundar has been sidelined for several weeks due to a rib injury and side strain, but assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed that the all-rounder returned to practice on Tuesday and is set to resume his bowling duties.

There is also positive news regarding Jasprit Bumrah, who is expected to return to training this week. The veteran pacer has been recovering from a viral fever that kept him out of the tournament opener. Ten Doeschate noted that while Bumrah is moving much better and feeling fit, the fact that he has not bowled in ten days leaves his immediate return to the playing eleven somewhat uncertain as the medical team evaluates his match readiness.

“Bumrah has been off 10 days without bowling, but he’s feeling a lot better and moving a lot better," Doeschate added.
