Australia's star spinner Nathan Lyon is set to be ruled out of the second Test because of the injury that he suffered on his calf on Day 2 at the Lord's. Lyon is one of the main bowlers for Australia but his injury might also rule him out for the remaining three matches of the ongoing Ashes series as well.
Lyon was forced off the pitch after suffering a suspected calf injury after attempting a catch at fine leg which left him feeling sore. He was then helped off the field of play. Cricket Australia confirmed, "Nathan Lyon suffered an injury to his right calf injury while fielding in the final session today. He will be further assessed after play."
Ahead of Day 3, Lyon arrived at the Lord's in crutches as he is set to sit out the rest of the match. He was wearing a white compression sock on his right calf and joined his teammate for the pre-play address but did not take the field with his teammates.
"Medical scans on Thursday evening confirmed the injury and while Australia could still call on him to bat in this match, the 36-year-old appears highly unlikely to bowl for the rest of the series," read the official statement on the Cricket Australia website.
He was seen talking to Todd Murphy, who made his debut for Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India. Murphy is Lyon's replacement and is set to make his debut in the Ashes at Headingley in the third Test.
After stumps, Lyon's teammate and centurion of the first innings Steve Smith shared an update on the spinner's condition, saying, “I haven't been up in the sheds yet, but obviously it didn't look good. It doesn't look ideal for the rest of the game. I'm not sure how he actually is. But obviously, if he's no good, it's a big loss for us.”
