After four disappointing scores, Harry Brook became England’s hero on Day 4 of Headingley Test as the hosts won by three wickets to keep the Ashes 2023 alive. During his impactful 75-run knock, Brook became the fastest to 1,000 Test runs in terms of balls faced.
Brook completed 1,000 Test runs from 1,058 balls. The previous record belonged to former New Zealand all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme who achieved it from 1,140 balls. The next two on the list are Tim Southee (1,167 balls) and England opener Ben Duckett (1,168 runs).
Brook also became the third-fastest England batter to 1,000 Test runs in terms of innings. He took 17 innings to get to the milestone. He shares the third spot with Gary Ballance. On the top of the list is Herbert Sutcliffe (12 innings) followed by Len Hutton (16 innings).
Brook walked in to bat when Zak Crawley lost his wicket to Mitchell Marsh and the score was 93/3. Chasing a total of 251, England lost Joe Root, skipper Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow. England were struggling at 171/6 after Bairstow's wicket. He reached his half-century from 67 deliveries. He shared a 59-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Chris Woakes.
The 24-year-old lost his wicket to Mitchell Starc who took a fifer in the fourth innings. Brook scored 75 runs from 93 balls including nine fours. Brook went for the pull shot but mistimed it. Pat Cummins and Starc nearly got into a collision but the former took the catch comfortably.
Despite Brook’s wicket, Woakes and Mark Wood took England home in the second session of Day 4. This is the sixth time 250-plus successful run chase at Headingley. Also, it is the fifth 250-plus run chase under Stokes' captaincy.
Earlier, in the first innings, Brook lost his wicket to Cummins for a single-digit score to Cummins who took a six-fer. In the first two Tests, he scored 132 runs from four innings at an average of 34.
