On Day 4 of the second Test of the Ashes 2023, when Australia needed as many runs as they could put on the board to set England a big target, an injured Nathan Lyon stepped up. Lyon, who was walking with the help of crutches on Day 3, showed an exemplary level of courage. He walked down one stair at a time. As he entered the ground hobbling, the Lord’s crowd erupted and lauded the bravery of Lyon. Even English fans could not stop themselves from acknowledging the ‘never give up’ attitude of Lyon for his team.
He scored four runs from 13 deliveries and shared a 15-run partnership for the 10th wicket with Starc to help Australia post 279 and set a 371-run target.
After the day's play, Lyon reflected on his decision to bat despite a torn calf and the veteran affirmed that he would do it again for his team.
"I've been having conversations since it happened with our medical team. I knew the risks. But I'll do anything for this team. You never know how big a 15-run partnership can be in an Ashes series. I'm proud of myself for going out there and doing that," Lyon was quoted as saying on cricket.com.au.
"I love this team. I love playing cricket for Australia. And if I can help out my teammates here and there, I'll do that. It was my call. I spoke to Ron (coach Andrew McDonald) and Patty. Patty was probably a little bit hesitant but I'll do anything for this team, and I'd do it again tomorrow," Lyon added.
Meanwhile, England ended Day 4 with a score of 114/4 on the board. The Three Lions recovered well after being reduced to 45/4 by the Australians. Opener Duckett remained unbeaten on 50 runs while captain Ben Stokes found some rhythm with the bat and scored 29 not out.
Despite the unbeaten 69-run partnership between Duckett and Stokes, Australia remain firm favourites to win the Test match and take a 2-0 lead in the series. England still needs 257 runs to win the game while the Baggy Greens require just six more wickets to secure a victory.
