Multiple records for Cummins as Aussie skipper's fifer dents English batters confidence

Newly elected Australian Test team captain Pat Cummins was on fire in Brisbane on Day 1 of the first Ashes Test. Cummins showed England batters why he is the no.1 Test bowler as the skipper toppled the English batters at Brisbane. Credit to his fierce bowling, England were bundled out to 147 runs only four of their batters scored in double digits. Cummins was in complete control of the red cherry as the skipper took a fifer in the first innings.

Haseeb Hameed, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Ollie Robinson, and Mark Wood became victims of Cummins' ruthless bowling as they had no answer the tall lanky fast bowler's deliveries on a green pitch in overcast conditions. With the five-wicket haul, Cummins became only the second Australian captain after George Giffen in 1984 to pick a fifer in the first Test as skipper. Cummins also became the first captain to pick up a fifer in an Ashes Test since Bob Willis in 1982.

Cummins five victims

The stage was set for the skipper to fire as England's top order was already reeling after losing early wickets. England all-rounder Stokes became the first victim of Cummins as a back of a length delivery rearing at the body of Stokes took the edge and safely landed in hands of slip fielder Marnus Labuschagne. The second to fall was Hameed as a full-length delivery slightly wider on length took a thick outside edge of the bat and was caught at the second slip by Steve Smith.

Robinson became the third scalp of Cummins as he nicked the ball straight into the hands of debutant keeper Alex Carey in an attempt to drive towards offside. Wood was caught by Marcus Harris at short leg as the short ball hurried on to him. The last scalp was Woakes as he got caught at fine leg by Josh Hazlewood in a similar fashion as Wood.
