Faf du Plessis, former South African cricket captain, openly criticized Cricket South Africa (CSA) for hosting the first Test match against Australia at Durban’s Kingsmead, a ground where Australia has a dominant winning record. Australia secured a commanding 214-run victory in the first Test, marking their fourth consecutive win at Kingsmead and giving them a 1-0 lead in the series. Du Plessis questioned the decision to start the series in Durban, highlighting South Africa’s poor record there compared to Australia’s strong performances. He expressed that this choice effectively gifted Australia a significant advantage right from the outset.
Additionally, Du Plessis voiced concerns about the notably low crowd attendance throughout the Durban Test. Despite the high-profile nature of the South Africa versus Australia series, the turnout at Kingsmead was disappointing, with crowd numbers described as abysmal on all match days. The low attendance and limited viewership figures for Durban Stadium, which ranks lowest among South African grounds for cricket viewership, were considered unacceptable for such an important series.
Looking ahead, South Africa still has opportunities to recover in the remaining tests of the series. However, the combination of the venue choice, low spectator turnout, and timing has led to an unfavorable start for the Proteas. Du Plessis’ remarks highlight ongoing challenges for Cricket South Africa in managing home series and maximizing both competitive and spectator advantages in future matches.
