David Warner scored a brilliant 70 in Australia's win over West Indies in 1st T20I.

Australia's veteran opener David Warner has officially announced the date of his retirement from international cricket. Warner confirmed that he will bid adieu to international cricket after the T20 World Cup 2024. Notably, Warner has already bid adieu to Test and ODI cricket, he continues to compete in T20I matches.

Warner dazzles with stunning 70 in Australia's win

Marking his return to T20I cricket, Warner delivered a stunning performance, scoring 70 runs off 36 balls. During his hiatus from international duties, he captained the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 league. His recent appearance marked his 100th T20I match, making him the third Australian cricketer to achieve this milestone, alongside Aaron Finch (103) and Glenn Maxwell (100).

Warner's knock powered Australia to big total

Warner's explosive innings contributed significantly to Australia's commanding total of 213/7. His blistering knock, characterized by a strike rate of 194.44, laid a strong foundation for the team. Supporting contributions from Josh Inglis (37), Tim David (39), and Matthew Wade (21) also played pivotal roles in Australia's formidable score.

In response, West Indies managed to score 202/8 but fell short by 11 runs, conceding the match. Brandon King (53) and Johnson Charles (42) laid a strong foundation with an 89-run opening partnership. However, following their dismissal, West Indies struggled to form significant partnerships to sustain their momentum.

In his 100th T20I appearance, Warner showcased glimpses of his vintage self with his exceptional strokeplay. Renowned for his prowess in T20I cricket from the outset, Warner seamlessly adapted his game to excel in other formats. His final ODI appearance was in the World Cup final against India, while his last Test match took place at his home ground in Sydney. The left-handed batsman is now poised to retire from international cricket following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup.

Warner reveals his international retirement date

“Pleasing to get the win on the board. Was a nice wicket to bat on and you have to make the most of those. Feel great and refreshed, I’m pumped. I want to play the T20 World Cup and finish there and it’s a good journey we’ve got going for the next 6 months. Pretty much the same squad going to New Zealand so it’s important we win there as well,” Warner said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Adam Zampa claimed three wickets, supported by Jason Behrendorff, Glenn Maxwell, and Sean Abbott, each taking one wicket, while Marcus Stoinis secured two dismissals, thwarting West Indies' pursuit. Australia secured their 10th T20I victory against West Indies out of 20 encounters, with both teams now having won 10 matches each. The Test series concluded with a 1-1 draw, while West Indies suffered a whitewash in the ODI series, being bundled out for a mere 86 runs in the final match, exposing their vulnerability in the format.

Skipper Powell rues West Indies' defeat

West Indies' skipper Rovman Powell attributed their defeat in the first T20I to a lack of partnerships during the game.

“We struggled to get partnerships in the middle, good game of cricket in the end though. Need to back ourselves a little bit more. I think the guys did well, just in the middle overs we lost a little bit. (About bowling himself more) When you have set batters and a difficult wicket, it’s difficult to bowl back to back overs so I brought on my strike bowler after we got a wicket. Was a nice atmosphere to play in,” said Powell after the loss.
