India captain Shubman Gill continued his stellar form in Test cricket and smacked his tenth century of the form during the second Test against West Indies. After Yashasvi Jaiswal departed during the early stages of Day 2, Gill steading the Men in Blue's innings alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy. The 26-year-old played some fine shots and eventually went on to reach his century after facing 177 deliveries.
India post huge total on the board
He formed key partnerships of 91 and 102 with Reddy and Dhruv Jurel respectively as India crossed the 500-run mark. The hosts eventually declared on 518/5 with Gill unbeaten on 129 runs from 196 deliveries. The batter hit 16 boundaries and two sixes in what was nothing short of a fantastic knock.
Impressed with his innings, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif hailed Gill for his batting effort and pointed out how he is keeping an Indian tradition alive with his stunning performances while batting at No.4.
"India is always blessed to have a solid world class batsman at No. 4. Shubman Gill continuing a great tradition," Kaif wrote in a post on X.
Meanwhile, Gill ended up breaking a ton of records with his century against the West Indies. Not only did he surpass Rishabh Pant to become India's highest-run getter in the history of the World Test Championship (WTC), but also became the second-fastest Indian player to score five Test centuries as captain. He achieved the feat in just 12 innings, surpassing Virat Kohli who took 18 innings to reach the milestone.
Gill's terrific form in red-ball cricket
Gill has been in magnificent form in the longest format ever since he was appointed as the side's captain before the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He scored four centuries during the five-match Test series against England and finished as the top-scorer with 754 runs from 10 innings. He has maintained that form in the ongoing series against West Indies and has scored 179 runs in just two innings so far.
