India win 2nd Test by 7 wickets, complete 3rd consecutive cleansweep at home against West Indies

India beat West Indies by seven wickets on Day 5 of the second Test at Arun Jaitley Stadium to complete cleansweep in the series. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill starred with hundreds whereas Kuldeep Yadav claimed eight wickets as India dominated the proceedings despite fightback from visitors, owing to John Campbell and Shai Hope’s centuries. This is Gill’s first Test series at home as captain. 

Starting at an overnight score of 63/1. India needed 58 more runs to win the second Test. Jomel Warrican started off with a maiden over. Rahul scored the first boundary of the day against Warrican. He took on Khary Pierre and smashed him for a maximum over long-on. Roston Chase got the consolation wicket of Sai Sudharsan. He edged one to slip fielder Shai Hope. The southpaw scored 39 runs from 76 balls, featuring five fours. He shared a 79-run partnership for the second wicket with Rahul.

Gill joined Rahul in the middle. Rahul looked to attack and hit a six over deep mid-wicket against Warrican. Gill hit a six and a four against Chase before getting caught by Justin Greaves. He scored 13 runs from 15 deliveries. In the 34th over of the innings, Rahul reached his half-century from 102 deliveries. On the second ball of the 36th over, Rahul hit a four to finish the run chase. India chased down the target of 121 in first session of Day 5. The opener remained unbeaten for 58 off 108 balls.

Jaiswal, Gill score big

Earlier, Gill won the toss and opted to bat first. Yashasvi Jaiswal's 175, Gill's unbeaten 129, Sudharsan's 87 and 40s from Nitish Reddy and Dhruv Jurel helped them post a mammoth total of 518/5 before declaring on Day 2. West Indies pacers remained wicketless. Warrican picked three wickets.

Kuldeep claims five

In reply, West Indies batters got starts but failed to convert. Left-arm chinaman bowler Kuldeep rushed claimed his fifth fifer as West Indies were bowled out for 248. Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets as well.

West Indies’ fightback 

Gill enforced follow-on. This time they were met with resistance from Campbell and Hope. They shared a 177-run partnership for the third wicket. Later, Greaves' unbeaten fifty and no.11 batter Jayden Seales' 32-run knock helped them post 390 and set a target of non-threatening target of 121.
