South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj suffered an awful injury while celebrating a wicket during the Proteas' 284-run win over the West Indies on day four of the second Test on Saturday, March 11. The win sealed a 2-0 whitewash for the Proteas as captain Temba Bavuma's reign as skipper started on a positive note.

The hosts gave their opponents a massive total for the win, courtesy of a brilliant 172 by Bavuma. While chasing 391 runs, the visitors crumbled under the pressure and were bundled out for 106 runs.

It was the wicket of Kraigg Braithwaite that launched a massive collapse for the West Indies as they went from 21 for one to 34 for six. Kyle Mayers fell in the 19th over but it was his wicket that spelt the end of the match for Maharaj.

The veteran spinner, who had already picked up the wicket of Roston Chase before, trapped Mayers in front of the stumps with an LBW. The umpire initially did not give the wicket but then skipper Bavuma went for the DRS review which ended in the favour of the Proteas.

Maharaj celebrated the decision in full fervour when he collapsed on the ground. Medics rushed onto the field and the veteran spinner had to be stretchered off. The 33-year-old was sent for a scan to assess the extent his injury, which, at the time, seemed to be a left ankle tendon injury.

With this injury concern, and having already lost Wiaan Mulder meant that the Proteas finished the match with just three frontline bowlers. But their services were not required in the end as the West Indies side crumbled like a pack of cards and were bowled out for just 106 runs, handing South Africa the win in the match and the series.

Simon Harmer and Gerald Coetzee picked up three wickets each on the day.
