The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Saturday, shared an update on the respective injuries of Team India's star players Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah, who have been sidelined due to recurring injuries over the last few months.

In a press release shared on the BCCI's official website, they have revealed that Bumrah has started his rehabilitation after completing the surgery on his back and is currently pain-free. Meanwhile, Iyer will undergo surgery for his lower back issue next week.

"Jasprit Bumrah underwent surgery in New Zealand on his lower back, which was successful and he remains pain-free. The fast bowler was advised by the specialist to start his rehab six weeks after the surgery and accordingly, Mr Bumrah has commenced his rehab management at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru from Friday."

"Mr Shreyas Iyer is scheduled to undergo surgery for his lower back issue next week. He will remain under the surgeon’s care for two weeks and will return to the NCA after that for rehabilitation," said the official release.

This means that the 29-year-old bowler has undergone a successful surgery in New Zealand and is now in a fight against time to make it to the Indian team for the upcoming 2023 World Cup which will be hosted by India.

For Iyer, he was hopeful of making it back for the IPL and wanted to avoid surgery but with him set to undergo the operation, it's highly unlikely that he will make it in time for the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

Earlier, a source had reported the same news about Bumrah. “He will soon report to NCA and VVS Laxman will closely monitor Bumrah's fitness. Since he was rushed for some matches and his issues remain as it is. So this time the board wants to take each and every step carefully. A wrong decision might cost team so no hurry as far as his return is concerned, plan is to give Bumrah some sort of match fitness before the ODI World Cup but do not rule out the possibility of straightaway seeing Bumrah at ICC's showpiece event,” the source said.

About Iyer, he took an injection on Wednesday (March 29) and the recovery period was to be decided by the NCA coaching staff who will be closely monitoring the star batter's situation.  "He has met the specialist and the NCA officials. All are on the same page that the operation can be deferred. He will follow the experts' advice," Cricbuzz reported via a source privy to the development.
