Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 has implemented a new rule concerning the use of zing bails, following controversial run-out calls during a match between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI). As per the new rule, for a batter to be declared out in run-out or stumping situations, the LED bail must be completely dislodged from the stumps.
WPL brings new rule after run-out controversy during DC vs MI clash
According to ESPNCricinfo, the newly implemented rule clarifies that for run-outs and stumpings, the LED bail must be completely dislodged from the stumps before the wicket is considered broken. Previously, the rules stipulated that the wickets were considered broken the moment the bails illuminated. However, these previous guidelines are now superseded by the new rule, which requires full dislodgement of the bail.
The ESPNCricinfo report explains that the rule change was prompted by the fact that the specific set of zing bails being used in the tournament are lighting up prematurely. This early illumination was causing confusion and potentially incorrect decisions, necessitating the rule adjustment to ensure fair play.
"The batch of bails being used during this WPL have been lighting up at the slightest disturbance, even when both spigots have not come off the grooves on top of the stumps," the report stated.
The third umpire for the Capitals versus Indians match, Gayathri Venugopalan, faced criticism for her handling of the zing bails. She consistently disregarded the initial lighting up of the bails and based her decisions on the moment the bails were fully dislodged from their grooves.
According to the report, umpires were already aware of the impending rule change prior to the match. However, the teams themselves were not initially informed. This communication gap has now been addressed, ensuring that all participating teams are now fully aware of the updated regulations regarding the zing bails.
In the match in question, the Delhi Capitals secured a thrilling two-wicket victory over the Mumbai Indians on February 15th. This exciting contest was the second game of the current WPL season, and it saw the Delhi Capitals edge out the defending champions in a closely fought encounter.
