Former England fast bowler Liam Plunkett has taken the next step in his sporting journey after making his competitive baseball debut for the Oakland Ballers in the Pioneer Baseball League. The 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup winner marked the occasion in memorable fashion by recording a strikeout during his first appearance on the mound.
Plunkett, who has been living in the United States since the latter stages of his cricket career, featured for the independent club under the league's special "marketing player" provision, which allows franchises to temporarily sign high-profile athletes from other sports.

Liam Plunkett makes impressive baseball bow
The 41-year-old lined up against the Yuba-Sutter Freebirds at Raimondi Park, where he experienced competitive baseball for the first time after years of representing England on the cricket field.
Despite entering unfamiliar territory, Plunkett produced one of the key moments of his outing by claiming a strikeout, giving supporters a glimpse of how his fast-bowling skills could translate to baseball.
Reflecting on the experience after the match, the former England seamer admitted he initially misunderstood the nature of his appearance before embracing the challenge.
"Originally, I thought it's like the ceremonial open pitch, but it was the real thing. I was first on the mound, a little bit nervous, but the catcher was excellent."
World Cup hero embraces a new sporting challenge
Liam Plunkett remains one of England's most celebrated white-ball cricketers, having played a pivotal role in the country's historic 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup triumph. He claimed three crucial wickets during the unforgettable final against New Zealand, which also proved to be his final international appearance.
Following the conclusion of his England career, Plunkett relocated to the United States, where he has continued playing cricket in Major League Cricket for the San Francisco Unicorns while exploring opportunities in baseball.
His latest appearance for the Oakland Ballers marks another unique chapter in a sporting career that continues to evolve well beyond international cricket. While baseball presents an entirely different challenge, Plunkett's debut demonstrated that his competitive instincts and ability to perform under pressure remain as strong as ever.
