During Rob Walter's tenure as head coach, the South African team reached the T20 World Cup 2024 final. In the summit clash, they were defeated by Rohit Sharma's Team India at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.
Under Walter's guidance, South Africa also competed in the semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2023, where they faced a loss against Australia at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Throughout his time as the head coach, Walter oversaw the team in 36 One Day International matches and 31 T20Is. During this period, South Africa also achieved series victories against teams including the Netherlands, Australia, Pakistan, and Ireland. Walter's most recent coaching assignment with South Africa was at the Champions Trophy 2025. In that tournament, the team was defeated by Mitchell Santner's New Zealand in the semi-final held at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
“Coaching the Proteas has been an incredible honour, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together,” Walter said after giving his resignation.
“The players, support staff, and the South African cricketing community have been fantastic throughout this journey. While it’s time for me to step away, I have no doubt that the team will continue to grow and reach even greater heights," Walter added.
Looking ahead, South Africa has a busy schedule of white-ball cricket. In July, they are set to play a T20I series against Zimbabwe. Following that, in August, they will host Australia for a series consisting of three T20I international matches and three ODIs. Their international commitments continue in September with a tour to England, where they will compete in three ODI matches and three T20Is. South Africa will then take on India in the multi-format series in November-December where they will play two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is.
