Arsenal commenced their English Premier League journey with aspirations of toppling Manchester City, securing a tight 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest, thanks to Bukayo Saka's exceptional goal.
The much-anticipated match encountered an initial hiccup as a turnstile malfunction led to a 30-minute delay in the kick-off. However, this unforeseen disruption did little to diminish the electric atmosphere at the Emirates, with Arsenal supporters hopeful of their team surpassing last season's second-place finish.
Nottingham Forest, who halted Arsenal's title ambitions with a victory last May, were determined to stage another upset. But their optimism took an early hit. Arsenal's former keeper, Matt Turner, now donning Forest's colors, fumbled an early clearance under pressure from Eddie Nketiah. Moreover, Brennan Johnson from the visiting side missed a golden opportunity after failing to capitalize on a clear opening.
Gabriel Martinelli's stellar move inside the Forest defensive territory set the stage for Nketiah, whose deflected shot, aided by Joe Worrall, pierced through Turner's defenses. With Arsenal in the lead, Saka further illuminated the stadium by masterfully converting William Saliba's pass, reinforcing Arsenal's dominance with a two-goal cushion heading into the break.
However, it wasn't all rosy for the Gunners. Mikel Arteta, Arsenal's tactical mastermind, had his concerns amplified as the summer acquisition, Jurrien Timber, looked to have sustained a knee injury. After Timber's questionable tackle just before the end of the first half, he tried to continue post-interval but was eventually substituted, raising alarms about his immediate availability.
Arsenal's dominance persisted in the second half, with Declan Rice, their prized £105 million signing, keeping Turner busy with successive attempts on goal. Yet, a swift counter-attack from Forest following a Rice-induced corner saw Anthony Elanga setting up Taiwo Awoniyi, who slotted home to reduce the deficit.
In the nail-biting closing minutes, Arteta's strategic move saw Gabriel Magalhaes substituting in for Martinelli to fortify Arsenal's backline. As Nottingham Forest intensified their attack with Chris Wood joining the fray, the Gunners showcased resilience, ensuring their campaign started on a triumphant note.
