Liverpool's renowned captain, Virgil van Dijk, finds himself amidst a suspension storm, making him unavailable for the crucial upcoming Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers. This predicament arises from van Dijk's on-pitch altercation following a red card during Liverpool's narrow 2-1 triumph against Newcastle United at St James' Park.

The spotlight of this incident was the Dutchman's challenge on Newcastle's Alexander Isak. Deemed dangerous, the tackle earned van Dijk a dismissal from the match referee, John Brooks. However, the episode did not end with the card, as the Netherlands international displayed apparent reluctance to exit the pitch, followed by a heated exchange with Brooks.

In the aftermath of this event, the Football Association undertook a stringent review, concluding with a one-match suspension extension for the Liverpool captain. Additionally, van Dijk was slapped with a hefty fine of 100,000 pounds after acknowledging his misconduct. The defender's actions against Newcastle and his subsequent dialogue with the official were highlighted as breaches of appropriate on-field behavior.

"The defender admitted that he acted in an improper manner and used abusive and insulting words towards a match official after being sent off in the 29th minute, and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent regulatory commission," an FA statement said.

Recently, after representing the Netherlands in their victory against Greece, van Dijk opened up about the incident. Speaking to the media, he expressed that the controversial reaction was uncharacteristic of him and didn't mirror his usual on-pitch demeanor.

"That was not typical for me. But it was the red card anyway. I've never got one before at Liverpool, and I think only about four times in my entire career. But apart from that I still started the season well," he said.
