Manchester United’s newly-appointed manager Ralf Rangnick began his stint with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace in the English Premier League (EPL) thanks to the solitary goal from Fred at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Brazil midfielder took aim with his weaker right foot and curled a shot from the edge of the area into the far corner in the 77th minute. Rangnick has already made an imprint on United's approach, deploying a 4-2-2-2 formation and getting his players to press high and play with more urgency compared to how the team set up under Rangnick's predecessor, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, a performance that started strongly tailed off in the second half, only for Fred to provide the telling intervention for just his second goal of the season.
Before that, Alex Telles had clipped the crossbar with a curling free kick and opposite full back Diogo Dalot had curled over at the end of a marauding run.
Cristiano Ronaldo started and played the full game, but didn't have a clear-cut chance. Manchester United jumped to sixth place in the standings with the victory against Crystal Palace.
Meanwhile, Brazilian midfielder Lucas Moura's wonder goal sent Tottenham on the way to a routine 3-0 win over Norwich City. Moura opened the scoring with a thunderbolt at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs are unbeaten in four Premier League games under manager Antonio Conte and trail fourth-placed West Ham by two points in the race for Champions League football.
The hosts took the lead in emphatic fashion in 10th minute. Lucas skipped away from a couple of challenges and played a neat one-two with Son, before drilling a stunning 25-yard effort into the top corner.
Despite losing Sergio Reguilon to injury, Spurs went close to adding a second before half-time. Ben Davies was just unable to turn the ball home from a free-kick, while Harry Kane's ambitious chip from distance was not too far wide. Spurs doubled their lead in the 66th minute when Sanchez lashed home after Son's corner ricocheted kindly into his path.
Son then got in on the act as he put the icing on the cake 13 minutes from time. Receiving the ball from Davies in the box, the South Korea international skipped away from a challenge and fired beyond Krul and into the bottom-left corner. Conte's side leapfrogged Arsenal into fifth in the Premier League table. Arsenal will get a chance to overtake both Tottenham and Manchester United as the Gunners take on Everton tonight. A victory at Goodison Park will lift Arsenal to fifth spot.
