Manchester United's in-form striker Marcus Rashford has been dropped for his side's final game of the year against Wolverhampton Wanderers, just days after helping his team beat Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. United face 18th-placed Wolves away from home at the Molineux.

When asked for the reason that the England international was missing this game, the club's manager Erik Ten Hag kept his answer brief, citing 'internal disciplinary' reasons and that it was 'due to our rules'.

Rashford was United's best player during their win over Nottingham, scoring the first goal and assisting the second, as the Red Devils returned from the FIFA World Cup 2022 with a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Ten Hag is known as a disciplinarian as much as he is an astute tactician. He chose to drop out-of-form Ronaldo, who criticised the Netherlands manager during an explosive interview with Piers Morgan. Now, his move to drop Rashford for whatever reason has garnered the appreciation of Manchester United legend Paul Scholes, who liked the way Ten Hag deals with his players.

"It's difficult to know the truth, really. He said internal disciplinary, you know, you think maybe lateness, something like that. But I love him, the way he’s really honest," Scholes said.

I love the way he's been with it, he doesn't care who it is. Marcus Rashford today would be the first day on his team, he's obviously done something that has upset him and that upset the rest of the team members as well," he added.

Adding to these feelings were his former teammate Rio Ferdinand, who echoed the same sentiments, ""The most important people are the players in that changing room and if they're responding to these type of decisions with respect and a nod and going: ‘you know what, that's for me, all being treated the same, you step out of line you get punished for it immediately’, that can only be positive for that dressing room.

"I think over the last few years, I think this changing room has probably needed that, that little bit of hardness and the discipline," Ferdinand added.
