Despite winning the FIFA World Cup 2022, Lionel Messi is still creating record after record. The talismanic forward took Argentina from a loss in the first game of the tournament to the coveted trophy, and also became the first footballer to win the Golden Ball trophy twice!
Now, Messi has created even more history after his Instagram post celebrating Argentina's triumph over France on Sunday, December 18, became the most-liked post by an athlete in Instagram history.
The post was a tribute with 10 pictures of him lifting the prize and Messi celebrating with his teammates. It has garnered over 58 million likes on the photo and video-sharing social media application.
"CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!!!! So many times I dreamed it, so much I wanted it that I still don't fall, I can't believe it...... Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us. We prove once again that Argentinians when we fight together and united we are able to achieve what we aim. The merit is of this group, which is above individuals, is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the one of all Argentinians... We did it!!! LET'S GO ARGENTINA DAMN!!!!! We're seeing each other very soon," Messi wrote in Spanish on the post.
This picture overtakes a photo which had both Messi and his Portuguese counterpart Cristiano Ronaldo for the designer label Louis Vuitton. The photo was of the prolific footballing duo playing a game of chess together which was shared before the FIFA World Cup.
While this picture was the previous record-holder for the most-liked post by an athlete in Instagram history, the post on Ronaldo's account has received more likes than the post of the same image on Messi's account.
Messi shared two more posts after that, including one with a trend followed by footballers who won major trophies. He was seen lying with the trophy on the bed, but it's likely that the legend got no sleep after the major celebrations that the Argentine fans were done in.
