Polish forward Robert Lewandowski scored his first-ever World Cup goal against Saudi Arabia during their Group C match at the Education City Stadium on Saturday, November 26. Upon doing so, the Barcelona forward immediately burst into tears.

It was a brilliant goal, as Lewandowski stole the ball off the Saudi defender and slotted it past goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais with his wand of a left foot. He came close to scoring again in the 90th minute but lost his balance near the post.

This was his 77th goal for Poland, and now, the 34-year-old has equalled the goal tally of Pele, who has 92 caps for Brazil, entering the top-10 list of men’s international goalscorers. Lewandowski achieved the feat in his 136th appearance for Poland.

Lewandowski started Poland’s opening game against Mexico but saw a golden chance from the spot brilliantly saved by Mexico keeper Guillermo Ochoa, thus increasing his wait for a goal at football’s biggest event. This is also his first goal at the World Cup.

He played his first World Cup for Poland in the 2018 edition of the tournament in Russia but in the three matches that he played, the veteran striker was unable to score a goal. He won one and lost two with his nation.
