Notably, after the disappointing loss against Ecuador, Germany registered the 24th loss in their history at the FIFA World Cup. The four-time World Champions have lost 24 games out of the 115 games they have played.

With their latest defeat, Germany have drawn level with defending champions Argentina in an unwanted FIFA World Cup record. Argentina, three-time world champions, have also lost 24 of their 90 World Cup games.

Mexico remains the only team with more FIFA World Cup losses than Argentina and Germany. The co-hosts of the 2026 edition have lost 28 of their 63 games across 18 outings in the tournament.

Next challenge for Ecuador in FIFA World Cup 2026

After a sensational 2-1 win over Germany in the group stage, Ecuador has officially qualified for the knockout stages of the tournament. Ecuador could lock horns against either of Mexico or England in the Round of 32 clash.

Notably, this marks the first time Ecuador has successfully progressed passed the World Cup group stage since 2006, ending a 20-year knockout drought.

What's next for Germany?

After enduring a surprising 2-1 loss to Ecuador, Germany has qualified for the knockout stages. The European side will be competing in the Round of 32 on Monday, June 29.

This is going to be Germany's first knockout game at the World Cup since they won the tournament back in 2014, ending a 12-year drought.
