Real Madrid's midfield star Luka Modric is hopeful of extending his contract with Real Madrid amid the many transfer rumours that the Champions League defending champions are planning to clean shop in their midfield department and bring in fresh new talent to rival Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga.

Modric joined Madrid from Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur 11 years back and has just a few more years on his current contract. However, the midfielder wants to extend his contract with the club, having won five Champions League titles and three Spanish league titles. He signed a one-year extension with the defending champions at the end of last season.

Modric won his fifth Champions League title in Paris in 2022, but with his contract expiring soon, the 37-year-old playmaker is not sure if this is his final season with the LaLiga club.

"It's a bit boring getting asked that question because it's the same answer: "I want to carry on here, I want to stay, I feel good and I want to continue as part of Real Madrid. I'd like to deserve to stay on my own merit, not that someone gives it on a freebie. No one has given me anything for free in my career and I don't want that to happen now," Modric said.

"If the club want to give me a contract then great but only on merit, only on what I do now, not what I have achieved and my history. Let's see what happens," he added

Reports in Spain suggest that Luka Modric's future at Real Madrid is dependent on whether Toni Kroos stays or if the Spanish club can sign Jude Bellingham Modric, who is out of contract at the end of the season, says that is not the case and that he is relaxed about talks.

"I think my case is separate to that, I don't think it has anything to do with it really," he elucidated about the rumours.
