Alan Shearer pointed out Florian Wirtz's hesitation in front of goal, calling Liverpool "wasteful" despite getting into good attacking positions.

Liverpool's record-breaking summer signings have yet to deliver, with the club languishing 14 points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Premier League icon Alan Shearer has noted the issue with the Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz after their loss against Bournemouth. The Germany international has struggled since his big move to the Premier League champions in the summer, with the club also struggling this season.

Alan Shearer notes big issue in Florian Wirtz's gameplay

Shearer spoke on BBC's Match of the Day, where he noted the performance of the former Bayer Leverkusen player against Bournemouth. He pointed out a few instances where Wirtz worked a good shooting angle, only to then decide against shooting and give the ball to some other player, indicating a reluctance to shoot.

“Why is he not having a shot? Look, he works it really well onto the left foot. Bend it into the corner! He chooses the worst option, again, it’s a terrible pass and nothing comes of it.

Again, Wirtz works himself into a good position. Again, he chooses not to shoot. Why? You’re not going to score goals. The two goals they got were from set pieces but, as I said, they got into good positions but they were so wasteful. That’s why I say they’ve gone soft", he said (via Liverpool World).

Florian Wirtz has yet to create an impact in the Premier League since his £115 million summer transfer to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen. The 22-year-old has scored four goals and gave five assists in 30 matches for the Reds amid their struggles this term.

No benefit for Liverpool after record-breaking transfer window

Liverpool made a record-breaking outlay in the summer of 2025, breaking the Premier League's transfer record twice with the additions of Wirtz and Alexander Isak. The Reds sit 14 points behind league leaders Arsenal after a flop campaign thus far, and will hope to finish the season on a positive note.

Liverpool change plans on transfer for veteran defender

Liverpool are set to change their decision to sell Andy Robertson this month, as per reports. The Scotland international has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur as he aims to play more regularly ahead of the FIFA World Cup later this year.

BBC Sport reports that the Reds will not proceed with a move away from the club for the 31-year-old left-back any longer. They had considered accepting a £5 million fee to sell the veteran defender to Tottenham ahead of his contract expiring in the summer.

Robertson will likely stay in Arne Slot's scheme of things after both Slot and Virgil van Dijk spoke of his importance after the Bournemouth game. The former Hull City player will see out his contract with the Reds and could leave as a free agent in the summer.
