The last day of the UEFA Champions League league phase was dramatic. All 18 teams played simultaneously, where the top teams fought for a place in the last eight in the standings. While several big clubs made it to the list, Real Madrid were stunned by Benfica 4-2 as the Whites got dumped into the qualifying playoffs by their former coach, Jose Mourinho.

The 15-time UCL champions, who were third in the 36-team standings, fell to ninth, which was one place below advancing directly in the round of 16, despite a brace from Kylian Mbappe. Astonishingly, Benfica advanced to the knockout phase in 24th place following a goal difference when their goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin scored a header in the eighth minute of the stoppage time.
Alvaro Arbeloa’s side will be joined by defending champions Paris Saint-Germain, falling into 11th place in the standings. Inter Milan will also be playing the qualifying playoffs. Meanwhile, Sporting CP has surprisingly joined Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, FC Barcelona, Chelsea, and Manchester City in the top eight.
