Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has provided a crucial update on the future of promising midfielder Andrey Santos, confirming the Brazilian's return to Stamford Bridge ahead of the upcoming Club World Cup. After a turbulent year of loans and limited opportunities, the 21-year-old now appears firmly in the plans of newly appointed head coach Enzo Maresca.
From loan struggles to French flourish
Santos’ journey since arriving from Vasco da Gama in January 2023 has been far from straightforward. Initially sent back on loan to his boyhood club, his time at Nottingham Forest that followed proved underwhelming due to a lack of minutes. However, a subsequent loan to Ligue 1 outfit RC Strasbourg — Chelsea’s sister club — changed the trajectory of his development.
Under coach Liam Rosenior, Andrey Santos emerged as a key asset for the French side, registering an impressive 10 goals and 3 assists across all competitions. His commanding midfield displays reignited interest across Europe, with the likes of Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly monitoring his situation for a potential permanent move.
Todd Boehly confirms Andrey Santos' return and Club World Cup involvement
Despite the buzz surrounding his future, Todd Boehly has ended the speculation by announcing that Santos will not only return to London but also be part of Chelsea’s squad for the FIFA Club World Cup.
“We’re going to the Club World Cup so, right now, we’re laser-focused on the Club World Cup,” Boehly told reporters. “We have some players that are joining us for the Club World Cup that weren’t on the team. Andrey Santos is coming from Strasbourg. We’re really excited about him and what we think he can add to the squad.”
This revelation signals a clear shift in Chelsea’s strategy — one that leans on refining existing talent rather than relying on heavy spending.
A strategic shift ahead of summer window
As Chelsea eye silverware in the Conference League final and sit in a strong position for Champions League qualification, Todd Boehly emphasized a more calculated approach to summer recruitment.
“We’re not looking at it as a spend, we’re looking at it as an investment and we’re trying to build the best portfolio of players that can perform at the highest level, for the longest periods of time.”
With Andrey Santos now seen as a valuable piece in this evolving project, his integration could mark a new era for Chelsea’s midfield under Maresca’s leadership.
