Cristiano Ronaldo became the talk of the internet when he missed late international teammate Diogo Jota’s funeral while everyone else was there. The Saudi Arabian striker has finally revealed the real reason behind his decision, which he feels was the right one to do so.
Here is why Cristiano Ronaldo missed Diogo Jota’s funeral
During his blockbuster interview with Piers Morgan, the Portuguese star stated that he has not attended any funeral after his father’s demise. While this was one of the reasons for his absence, he also didn't want to make it all about him. Ronaldo, in the aforementioned interview, said:
"Two things: people criticise me a lot. I don't care about that. When your conscious is good and free, you don't have to worry about what people say.”
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United legend said:
"But one of the things I don't do? After my father died, I have never been to a cemetery again.”
Cristiano, who is one of the most famous people in the world as his stardom is well known stated that he didn't want to turn all the attention towards him during that time. He told Morgan:
"When you know me and you know my reputation? Wherever I go, it is a circus.”
Cristiano continued:
"I don't go out because, if I go, the attention goes to me. I don't want this sort of attention.”
The Saudi League striker told the British journalist that he is not a fan of doing interviews during sensitive moments. He also stated how “circus” life is when people do interviews during sensitive moments, and hence, he doesn't want to be part of such moments.
Speaking on his decision to skip the late Liverpool player’s cremation, Ronaldo showed no regret and told the aforementioned interview:
"People can continue to criticise. I felt good with my decision."
Jota’s sudden death left the football world mourning in a car crash in Spain when he was just 28. Along with him, the world also lost his brother Abdre Silva a the age of 25. Jota has left behind his three children with his long-term partner and Rute Cardoso, whom he had just married.
