Denmark's Christian Eriksen eyes comeback from cardiac arrest; targets World Cup 2022

It is going to be nothing less than a miraculous turnaround. Denmark international Christian Eriksen’s career was effectively ended after he had his contract terminated recently by the Italian club Inter Milan after having a heart-starter device implanted following his dramatic collapse. Eriksen's contract was terminated because device such as heart-starter are not permitted in Italy.

But on January 4 (Tuesday), Eriksen said that his goal was to play in this year's World Cup scheduled to be played in Qatar.

Return to EPL?

Reports are also suggesting that in England he could also make a return to the Premier League amid interest from various teams.

29-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder had not played since suffering a cardiac arrest against Finland in last year's Euro in Copenhagen, when he received life-saving treatment on the pitch.

“My goal is to play in the World Cup in Qatar, that's been my mindset all along. Whether I'll be picked is another thing, but it's my dream to come back. So until then I'm just going to play and prove that I'm back at the same level," he said.

Eriksen said that his heart was "not an obstacle," but he was prompt enough in adding that the event at Copenhagen's Parken Stadium was unlikely to be repeated.

"My dream is to rejoin the national team and play at Parken again and prove that it was a one-timer. Again, it's up to the manager to assess my level," he added.

The tragic incident

The opening match of Group B of Euro was paused amid emotional images after Eriksen fell to the ground and Danish players immediately gestured to the medical staff to attend the attacking midfielder and his teammates were in tears as the 29-year-old was given CPR.

Eriksen was eventually carried off the field at the Parken Stadium after having a lengthy treatment and a photo showed him apparently holding his head as he laid on the stretcher.

Weeks back, newspapers reported that the Danish playmaker is in the process of building up his fitness as he was aiming to sign for a new club after his departure from Inter Milan.

Virtually his last public gesture was to wave to fans as he was carried from the Parken Stadium pitch on a stretcher.
