Manchester United suffer fourth defeat in seven matches, deepening the crisis under Ruben Amorim.

Calls grow louder for the club’s hierarchy to act swiftly on the manager’s future.

Manchester United’s turbulent start to the 2025-26 Premier League campaign has sparked fresh criticism of Ruben Amorim, with former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher branding the Portuguese manager’s stint at Old Trafford a “disaster.”

United’s struggles under Amorim

Amorim’s appointment at United came with high expectations following his success at Sporting Lisbon, but the Red Devils have endured a shaky beginning under his leadership. United have already lost four of their opening seven matches this season, with their latest setback coming in a 3-1 defeat to Brentford.

The loss was particularly damaging given that United had just beaten Chelsea, raising hopes of building momentum. Instead, the team fell flat against the Bees, leaving supporters and pundits questioning Ruben Amorim’s ability to steer the squad back into contention for European places.

Carragher’s damning verdict

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher did not hold back in his assessment of the situation.

“I think he's still in a job because the powers-at-be have made so many mistakes that they almost don't want to admit right now they have made another. This has been a disaster for Amorim and United. The quicker they make a decision on the manager we are only waiting for the inevitable. This has to end as quickly as possible,” Carragher stated.

Carragher went further, arguing that Ruben Amorim has failed to establish a coherent system at United and that other managers would easily outperform him.

“I think every other Premier League manager would think 'I could do a better job' – the only positive is they haven't gone all out for his system. Any competent football manager could get United to the European places or certainly fighting for them. It couldn't have gone any worse. What he did at Sporting was really special, but it will be better for everyone to just shake hands and move on,” he added.

Mounting pressure on Ruben Amorim

The criticism comes amid growing unrest among fans, with United’s inconsistent performances leaving them adrift of their rivals in the top four race. While Amorim’s tactical approach brought silverware in Portugal, the Premier League has proved a sterner test, with questions raised about whether his methods suit United’s squad.

As the season progresses, pressure will only intensify on the United board to act swiftly. With the club’s ambitions of competing at the highest level, continued setbacks may make Ruben Amorim’s departure seem inevitable — just as Carragher suggested.
