FIFA has once again made headlines for enforcing its regulations, this time forcing a nation to forfeit a crucial World Cup qualifier due to a ban on international competition. The decision underscores the governing body’s strict stance against government interference in national football associations, a recurring issue that has affected several countries in recent decades.
Historical precedents of FIFA suspensions
FIFA’s intervention in national football is not unprecedented. Countries like Pakistan, Congo, and Kuwait have previously faced suspensions for failing to comply with FIFA’s statutes. Ahead of the 2018 World Cup, the Kuwait Football Association was banned from international competition, despite leading in Group G during AFC qualifiers. Kuwait had accumulated 10 points from three wins and one draw.
However, the suspension meant Kuwait could not participate in its remaining three fixtures, including away games against Myanmar and South Korea, as well as a home match versus Laos. All three matches were subsequently awarded as 3-0 defeats, leaving Kuwait one point behind second-placed Lebanon and eliminating them from both World Cup qualification and the 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers.
This incident marked the third time FIFA had suspended Kuwait, reflecting repeated non-compliance with regulations. The ban was lifted in December 2017 after legal reforms were introduced.
FIFA confirmed that, “the Kuwait Parliament has adopted a new Sports Law of Kuwait, which replaces all the previous ones and has been amended in order to be fully compliant with the FIFA Statutes and requirements.” Shortly afterward, Kuwait resumed competition and even hosted the Gulf Cup.
Recent enforcement: Equatorial Guinea case
Ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, FIFA once again imposed strict penalties when Equatorial Guinea forfeited two matches due to fielding an ineligible player. Former Middlesbrough and Birmingham forward Emilio Nsue scored decisive goals against Namibia and Liberia, but it was later ruled that he had not been formally cleared to represent Equatorial Guinea internationally.
Nsue served a six-month ban, and although he was eventually cleared by FEGUIFUT after a successful appeal, Equatorial Guinea could not regain the points. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed the case, stating: “Since the appeal is directed solely at FIFA and does not name the NFA and LFA as co-respondents, the panel concludes that the appeal must be dismissed.”
