On an otherwise celebratory day when the Spanish Women's soccer team basked in the glory of their FIFA Women's World Cup victory, a single act sent shockwaves across the sporting world. Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation, was caught in a maelstrom of controversy. His act of kissing star player Jenni Hermoso without her approval post the award ceremony was neither anticipated nor easily forgotten.
Rubiales, a former player and the head of Spain's primary players' union had contributed significantly to the sport in Spain. Elected in 2018, he had held the reins of the Spanish federation, guiding it through various tournaments and challenges. His tenure, until the scandal, had been marked by dedication and commitment.
Almost immediately after the incident, FIFA took prompt action. Recognising the severity of the indiscretion, the global football body suspended Rubiales. But that was just the beginning. Within days, the country's prosecutors' office charged Rubiales with accusations of sexual assault and coercion. The charges were instigated after Jenni Hermoso took the brave step to formally accuse him of the assault.
The whirlwind of events culminated in Rubiales announcing his decision to resign from his prestigious post. Using X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Rubiales conveyed his decision to the world. "After my swift suspension by FIFA, and the rest of the cases building against me, it is clear that I cannot return to the post," read his statement. This resignation was not just from his role as the federation's president but also as UEFA's vice president.
Rubiales will be replaced by Pedro Rocha. Rocha, the interim Spanish federation president, had taken the helm when Rubiales was initially suspended on August 26. Upon receiving news of Rubiales' final decision to resign, Rocha now had the responsibility to steer the federation through these turbulent waters.
