Joe Thompson, a former Manchester United academy player and Rochdale hero, has tragically passed away at the age of 36 following his third battle with cancer. The ex-midfielder, known for his resilience and inspiring spirit, was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma in April last year — a diagnosis that marked his third confrontation with the disease.
Born in Bath, Thompson carved out a respected professional football career, making 260 appearances, including over 200 for Rochdale across three spells. He played a pivotal role in the club’s promotion to League One in 2010 and famously scored the goal in 2018 that kept Rochdale in the division — a moment he described as “written in the stars, fate, destiny.”
Despite receiving the all-clear from cancer twice during his playing days, his latest diagnosis proved too great a challenge. Thompson passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, surrounded by his loved ones.
