Gary Neville has spoken about Liverpool's recent performances in the ongoing season after a sixth successive victory on Saturday. The Reds collected three points at home against arch rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby, securing a 2-1 win.
Pundit Nevil spoke on NBC Sports about the derby, giving his thoughts on what Arne Slot's side have shown this season. The Manchester United icon highlighted the way Reds have managed to secure wins in all of their games even when not their best as sign of a great team.
"They keep getting over the line, its a great habit to have, I don't think they are at their very best yet but they have so much firepower. The manager is brave, Slot goes to win every single game. A little bit nervy for them when Everton scored but when you look at Liverpool, it always feels like they've got another gear to shift into and do enough to win matches and that is a great habit", he said.
Liverpool have managed to defeat every single side they have come up against, winning five matches in the Premier League and once in the UEFA Champions League against Atletico Madrid. They have had to depend on late smash-and-grab performances and ridden their luck, at times, but they have managed to maintain their 100% record this season.
After their league win in the 2024-25 season, Liverpool made big investments this summer. They broke the Premier League record to sign Florian Writz and Alexander Isak.
Wayne Rooney warns Mohamed Salah won't be happy with Alexander Isak's Liverpool arrival
Mohamed Salah had been the main man at Anfield, and registered 34 goals and 23 assists last from just 52 matches across all competitions in the last season. The 33-year-old penned a new deal with Liverpool that keeps him at the club until 2027.
However, with the Egyptian already on the wrong side of 30, Liverpool are creating succession plans for the attack. In Isak, the reigning Premier League Champions have a serious goalscorer who could start the new era for Liverpool.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, as cited by The Daily Star, Rooney said that the 25-year-old striker's arrival could push Salah to perform better.
“Even though Salah has been the best player at Liverpool for years, he won't be happy that Isak has come in and is getting the attention. It's a matter of personal pride, he will want to be the best," said Rooney.
He added:
“When we signed Tevez there were lots of reports saying they were concerned that we couldn't play together. But as soon as we signed players I used to think, 'There's no way he is coming in to take my place'. So that naturally gives you a lift.”
Isak came off the bench in the match against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League earlier this week to make his debut for Liverpool. He came off the bench against Everton on Saturday as well, and replaced Hugo Ekitike in the 67th minute.
