Harvey Elliott has opened up about his future at Liverpool following speculation linking him with a potential move away from the club this January. Despite facing limited playing time this season, Elliott is determined to stay and fight for his place in the squad.
Struggles for regular minutes
Elliott, who has made just 11 appearances for the Premier League title contenders this season, has found his opportunities in the starting lineup hard to come by. Manager Arne Slot has often preferred the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones for the coveted No.10 role, limiting Elliott's involvement.
A foot injury earlier in the season sidelined the 21-year-old for a while, but since his return, his Premier League appearances have been limited to substitute roles.
Impactful substitute performance
Elliott made an impactful appearance off the bench during Liverpool's crucial 2-0 win over Brentford, helping secure three points for the team. Despite his reduced role, the young Englishman remains committed to contributing to the team’s title push for the remainder of the season.
He made it clear that he’s not seeking a move away, even with interest reportedly coming from clubs such as Brighton and Borussia Dortmund.
Elliott's determination to fight for his spot
In an interview after the victory in West London, Elliott reaffirmed his love for Liverpool, stating, “Liverpool is my club. Liverpool is my team. I want to fight for my place, fight for my position in the team.”
He emphasized the importance of putting in hard work and maintaining the right attitude to earn more playing time. “It’s down to me to put in the effort, the hard work, the desire, to make that achievement. I am not going to give up, I am going to keep fighting,” he added.
Conversations with Arne Slot
Elliott also revealed that he has had conversations with manager Arne Slot regarding his playing time. While he admitted he would like more opportunities, Elliott understands that patience is key.
“I just have to keep working hard, keep trying to help the team out whenever I'm needed and just wait for my opportunity," he explained. "I don’t expect to come in and play straight away. I want to help my team out as much as I can and the club and give everything I can.”
Manager's praise for Elliott's contributions
Elliott’s efforts did not go unnoticed by Slot, who praised the youngster’s impact during the match against Brentford. Slot acknowledged Elliott's contribution to both goals, saying, “I was delighted Elliott's performance when he came on and I’m happy we give you a chance to ask another question! All the other interviews, there was a lot of focus on Darwin Nunez because he scored two goals and every time I said, 'Yeah, but don’t forget Harvey – he had a big impact on both goals as well.'”
Slot further emphasized how valuable it is for the team to have players capable of making a difference from the bench, adding, “It’s so nice for me, for us as a team, that I have players that can impact the game on the bench as well."
Elliott and his teammates will return to action midweek when they face Lille in the Champions League at Anfield, where the young Englishman will be hoping for more chances to showcase his talent.
