The 28-year-old Liverpool forward died in a car crash in Spain on Thursday. Not just this, he was along with his brother, Andre Silva, who also died in the same crash. A report from the Spanish police mentioned that the accident took place on the A-52 highway in the province of Zamora.

Diogo Jota and Cristiano Ronaldo shared the pitch for the national team less than a month ago, when they defeated Spain 5-3 on penalties to win the UEFA Nations League title for the second time in their history. Jota came off the bench during the second half of the extra time.

The last time Diogo Jota played was June 8 as the Nations League final was held in Munich, Germany. Later that month, he got married to his partner of 10 years, with whom he shared three kids.

It doesn’t make sense. We were only just in the national team together, you had only just got married, Ronaldo posted on the social media platform X.

To your family, your wife and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you’ll always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We’ll all miss you.

Diogo Jota played for the National team on 49 occasions, and along with Ronaldo, he was part of the victorious team that won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025. On November 14, 2019, Jota made his international debut for Portugal and was the replacement for Ronaldo. The match was ultimately won by Portugal as they thrashed Lithuania 6-0 in the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier.

That moment… A moment you’ve always dreamed of … debut for @portugal ! Made better by the fact that it brought the best in history @cristiano [Ronaldo] 🙌🏻 Forever in the memory, Jota said at that time.

While talking to ESPN UK, Diogo Jota said that his favorite memory of Ronaldo was his hat-trick against Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League semifinals in 2019.

I was on the bench. It was a really, really good game. That was the moment I thought, ‘Yeah, I watched this for years when I was a kid, and now I’m watching here in this team, he said.

The Liverpool forward was a crucial player as he helped them win the 2024-25 Premier League season, along with FA Cup and League Cup in 2021-22. During his time at Anfield, he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the club in all competitions. Before playing for Liverpool, he played for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Atletico Madrid and FC Porto.
