Barcelona star goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is reportedly set to join Girona on loan for the remainder of the season. He has also agreed to take a big pay cut to initiate the move to get regular playing minutes.
Loan move for Marc-Andre ter Stegen
Ter Stegen has played just one game for Barca this season, which came in the Copa del Rey Round of 32. He was previously injured, but even after his comeback, head coach Hansi Flick preferred Joan Garcia. Barcelona signed the Spanish player from Espanyol last season.
Ter Stegen, meanwhile, is looking for regular playing minutes ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Hence, as per Cadena SER, he is set to join Girona on loan for the leftover season. The Negotiations have been going on for some time and are set to be completed soon.
The German goalkeeper has also decided to take a pay cut to join Girona who will pay him €1 million, marking their wage cap. This also allows Barcelona to get a high-earner player off their books for the rest of the season.

Director of German national team asserts Barcelona star has to appear regularly
Earlier this month, the German national team director Rudi Voller said Sport 11 that Marc-Andre ter Stegen need to play regularly. He said that following his injury, the Barcelona star need to regain full fitness, saying (h/t Barca Blaugranes):
“Ter Stegen has to play. Especially after his injury, and given his injury history, he needs to get match fitness to regain his form. Regardless of his quality.”
Voller had also spoken regarding this in October 2025 when Ter Stegen was getting recovered from his injury, and said:
"A goalkeeper like Marc-André ter Stegen actually deserves to play in a World Cup – although Oliver Baumann is doing very, very well replacing him at the moment.
“We obviously hope that Marc-André will come back. But whether at Barcelona or any other club – this is also important to say, and he knows that in his communication with Julian: To make it back, he obviously has to play. If he does, then he has a great chance and will probably be our goalkeeper at the World Cup.”
Ter Stegen has played 44 games for the German national team, securing 13 clean sheets.
