Several Inter Miami players and officials, including Sergio Busquets and Tomas Aviles, face multi-game suspensions and fines.

Inter Miami is reeling after the Leagues Cup disciplinary committee handed down multiple suspensions following the heated post-match brawl against the Seattle Sounders. The sanctions, announced Friday, target both players and officials and could have significant implications for the team as it navigates the remainder of the season.

Luis Suarez receives lengthy suspension

At the center of the controversy is Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez, who has been slapped with a six-game suspension for spitting at a Sounders staff member. The punishment represents the most severe in the Leagues Cup disciplinary actions this week and adds to Suarez’s history of controversial incidents.

Suarez’s career has previously been marked by disciplinary controversies, including a 10-match ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic in the Premier League (2013) and a nine-match suspension for biting Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup. Most recently, he received an eight-game ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra.

Other Inter Miami players penalized

In addition to Luis Suarez, other Inter Miami players faced sanctions:

Sergio Busquets: Two-game suspension for violent conduct.

Tomas Aviles: Three-game suspension, also for violent conduct.

These suspensions currently apply solely to the Leagues Cup competition, with the possibility of additional penalties from MLS pending. The disciplinary committee also noted that undisclosed fines would be imposed on all involved parties.

Impact on team and season

Inter Miami resumes MLS play on September 13, but the absence of key players could disrupt team dynamics. Both Luis Suarez and Busquets are entering the final months of their contracts, leading to speculation that they may retire after the season.

The sanctions come at a critical time for the club, which is striving to maintain momentum in the league after a string of tense matches. Losing star performers during pivotal games could hinder their campaign and affect their standings in both domestic and international competitions.

Seattle Sounders staff also penalized

The disciplinary committee did not limit its sanctions to Inter Miami. Seattle assistant coach Steven Lenhart received a five-game ban for violent conduct, emphasizing that the committee sought to hold all parties accountable for the post-match altercation.

With the fallout continuing, Inter Miami must navigate the challenges of fielding a competitive squad while managing off-field controversies that could affect morale and team cohesion.
