Several big team managers were axed mid-season, with Xabi Alonso being the latest one. The former Bayer Leverkusen head coach was sacked after Real Madrid’s 2-3 loss to arch-rivals FC Barcelona in the first El Clasico of the season.
Arne Slot’s job is also on the line following the struggling form of Liverpool. There are rumors that he will be replaced by Alons,o and here is what the Liverpool boss has said of the former Real Madrid head coach.
Arne Slot’s bizarre reply on Xabi Alonso replacing him at Liverpool rumors
Speaking on Alonso rumors, Slot replied:
"He called me saying he will take over six months! No, no, no.”
Slot continued:
"One of the weirdest questions I've ever got. What is there to say? I am working here for 18 months and I like my work here. Won the league, struggled more this season, that is obvious.”
The Liverpool manager, speaking of the boos, said:
“The boos...no maybe I heard a few but it wasn't a lot but that is also normal that when you draw v Burnley, no-one is happy with that.”
Slot continued:
"But when the people went home, the emotions calmed down maybe they thought [it was too much]."
Alonso was heavily linked with the Reds when legendary coach Jurgen Klopp announced his departure from the club. However, the former Liverpool midfielder decided to stay with Leverkusen before he landed a jon with his former team at Real Madrid.
Things did not go as planned, and Alonso’s spell with the Spanish giants ended just months after his tenure. His availability has led to speculation about him being a possible replacement at Anfield.
While it remains to be seen for how long Slot can save his managerial job with the Premier League side, the Reds are set to face Marseille as they resume their campaign in the UEFA Champions League.
