Crystal Palace’s FA Cup clash took a harrowing turn when star striker Jean-Philippe Mateta was stretchered off just nine minutes into the match following a reckless challenge by Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts. The incident, which saw Roberts receive a straight red card, cast a shadow over Palace’s eventual 3-1 victory, leaving fans and teammates anxious about Mateta’s condition.

Manager Oliver Glasner and club owner Steve Parish have since broken their silence, offering updates on the forward’s health—and fiery criticism of the tackle. What’s next for Mateta, and how severe are his injuries? Here’s the latest.

Glasner and Parish slam reckless challenge as Mateta battles injury

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed post-match that Jean-Philippe Mateta is “conscious and in hospital” but warned of the severity of the striker’s injuries.

“His ear looks terrible, and it’s a very serious injury. We hope all the best for him. Let’s see,” Glasner said, visibly shaken.

The Austrian admitted he avoided watching the incident live but later reviewed the footage, calling it “terrible” and emphasizing that such challenges have no place in the game.

“I’m sure the goalkeeper didn’t want to injure JP—no player wants this. But if you go for the ball like this, with your foot at that height, you just can’t do it. It’s so dangerous.”

Palace owner Steve Parish didn’t mince words either, delivering a scathing critique of Roberts’ actions.

“In all my time in football, I’ve never seen a challenge like it,” Parish fumed. “That is the most reckless challenge on a football pitch that I think I’ve ever seen. He needs to have a long, hard look at himself—endangering a fellow professional, maybe even his life.” Parish questioned the referee’s decision to consult the VAR screen, adding, “He’s a human being, let’s forget about a football player. If you’re kicking someone in the head with full force like that, God knows what damage he’s done.”

Millwall manager Alex Neil, however, defended his goalkeeper, insisting there was no malicious intent.

“I don’t think it’s meant. Why would there be intent? It’s the start of the game. The ball gets put in behind, and he’s just trying to get there. I certainly wouldn’t label it the worst challenge I’ve seen.”

What’s Next for Jean-Philippe Mateta?

While Palace awaits further medical updates, the immediate focus is on Jean-Philippe Mateta’s recovery. The 26-year-old, who has netted 12 goals this season, is a linchpin in Glasner’s attack. His absence could derail Palace’s push for a top-half Premier League finish and FA Cup ambitions.

The incident has reignited debates over player safety and refereeing standards. For now, though, the football world holds its breath, hoping for positive news about Mateta’s prognosis.
