Story Highlights:

Al-Ittihad fans burned Benzema jerseys following his shock switch to title rivals Al-Hilal.

The 2022 Ballon d’Or winner leaves after 54 goals in 83 games, citing respect despite a contract dispute.

French striker Karim Benzema's surprising switch from Al-Ittihad to Al-Hilal on deadline day has had Al-Ittihad fans express their unhappiness by burning the Frenchman's jerseys.

Failed contract extension talks between Benzema and Al-Ittihad

Benzema, 38, was absent from the Tigers' squad for the 2-2 Saudi Pro League at Al-Fateh despite no injury or fitness concerns. Nevertheless, Al-Ittihad nearly won the game, thanks to a Saleh Alsheri brace either side of the break, only for Mathias Berger to drill home a dramatic 99th-minute equaliser.

It has now claimed that the 2022 Ballon d'Or winner's absence was because of a breakdown of contract extension talks with the Tigers. According to Inter Region, the defending Saudi Pro League champions offered Benzema no fixed salary but income based on image rights.

The former Real Madrid striker considered that disrespectful, leading to a collapse in negotiations. Al-Hilal entered the fray on transfer deadline day and signed Benzema till the conclusion of the 2027 season after his Al-Ittihad contract was terminated.

Displeasure among Al-Ittihad fans because of Benzema's exit

All About SPL has posted a video of fans taking down Benzema's Al-Ittihad jersey and setting it on fire. Here is the video clip:

Saudi journalist Waleed Alfaraj told MBC Action that the Tigers had a upgraded deal to Benzema through his agent and brother, but the French forward rejected it, confirming his exit from the club with a note of thanks:

"Al Ittihad, This chapter comes to an end, but the respect and gratitude will always remain. Thank you to the club, the staff, my teammates, and especially the fans for the welcome, the love, and the energy you gave me every day.

"This journey gave me a lot, both personally and professionally. I leave with my head held high, proud to have worn these colors and of everything we shared. I wish you all the best for what’s next."

Benzema leaves Al-Ittihad with a record of 54 goals and 17 assists in 83 games across all competitions.
