Story Highlights:

Lionel Messi is often regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time.

The debate over who is the greatest soccer player of all time has long been a subject of intense discussion, especially when it comes to comparing Messi and his long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Former Real Madrid teammate and Argentina international Angel Di Maria recently commented on the ongoing Messi vs. Ronaldo debate.

Lionel Messi, often regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time, has achieved a level of success that many believe is unparalleled in the sport. With eight Ballon d'Or titles, 10 La Liga championships, four Champions League trophies, two Ligue 1 titles, a World Cup, and two Copa América victories, Messi's trophy collection is nothing short of extraordinary. However, despite his vast accomplishments, the 37-year-old forward, currently playing for Inter Miami, continues to show remarkable humility and gratitude for the life and career he's led.

Lionel Messi's humble perspective on his achievements

In a recent interview with Zane Lowe for Apple TV, Messi shared his surprise at the incredible journey his career has taken.

I never imagined I would experience what I did and have the career that I had, Messi admitted. I never thought it, never imagined it, my only objective and dream was to be a professional, play football since I was very little and I liked balls, and I liked playing.

Messi’s love for the game and the sense of fulfillment he gets from his accomplishments are clearly reflected in his words.

I love the game, competing, winning, I am very thankful to God for everything he gave me, what I achieved, he continued. I was lucky to achieve everything in football, both as a group with the teams, the National Team, individually, I wouldn't even have asked him so much, he really gave me many gifts in my life. He gave me everything and I am simply grateful for my career, and the life I was given.

Messi vs. Ronaldo: the ongoing debate

The debate over who is the greatest soccer player of all time has long been a subject of intense discussion, especially when it comes to comparing Messi and his long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward, now playing for Al-Nassr, has also had a phenomenal career, with five Ballon d'Or awards, three Premier League titles, two La Liga titles, five Champions League trophies, and a European Championship among his many honors. Unlike Messi, however, Ronaldo is known for his outspoken belief in his own greatness.

In a recent interview with El Chiringuito, Ronaldo boldly declared himself the greatest player in history.

I think so, I honestly haven't seen anyone better than me. You have to look at the numbers full stop, he said. I believe I am the most complete player who has ever existed. It’s me. I do everything in football. I play well in terms of heading the ball, I’m good at free-kicks, I’m good with my left foot, I’m quick, I’m strong, I jump. I am the best player ever, I believe that.

Di Maria's take on the Messi-Ronaldo rivalry

Former Real Madrid teammate and Argentina international Angel Di Maria recently commented on the ongoing Messi vs. Ronaldo debate. Di Maria, who has played alongside both legends, pointed out the key differences between the two players' careers.

Ronaldo always tried to be the best, but he was born in a generation where Messi made everything he touched turn to gold, Di Maria said. The reality is demonstrated in the numbers. One player won eight Ballon d'Or awards while the other won five. Another key difference is that one has lifted the World Cup. There are many differences between the two players.

Di Maria also emphasized Messi’s effortless brilliance.

If one watches every minute of every match, Messi makes it look so easy, as if he were having a kickabout in his back garden, he concluded.
