The Sky Blues midfielder has been linked with the 15-time UEFA Champions League winners for a long time now. While Jose Mourinho’s side signed several players during the offseason, there was no conclusion with Rodri.

Rivals FC Barcelona then bid for the player, and as per Fabrizio Romano, he has decided to join Barcelona rather than Real Madrid; his agent has confirmed. Pablo Barquero told Spanish radio programme El Larguero that the Spain captain informed Real Madrid of his choice “out of respect,” praising the club for handling the situation with class. Personal terms with Barcelona are fully agreed.
According to a report by the Italian transfer expert, the development was processed early on Friday, noting that the player has given the green light for the Catalan club to advance talks with Man City over a transfer fee.
Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner and Golden Ball recipient at the 2026 World Cup after captaining Spain to the title, is entering the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium. Mourinho’s side had been working on a deal for several weeks and were considered favourites, but progress on the fee stalled.
Barcelona seized the opportunity, particularly following Frenkie de Jong’s injury, with the midfielder drawn to Hansi Flick’s project and the chance to reunite with several Spain teammates already at the club.
There is no official news yet that the Premier League star will sign for the La Liga defending champions. However, it seems that Rodri has already made up his mind which club to go to in Spain. The Ballon d’Or winner joined City from Atletico Madrid in 2019 and has become an influential part of the squad. He also played a very important role in the recently concluded World Cup for Spain.
