Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær has been officially sacked after a humiliating loss to Watford by 1-4. The news was confirmed on the social media account of Manchester United on Sunday. The Norwegian was in charge since Jose Mourinho was sacked on the eve of Boxing Day 2018.

A statement on the official twitter account read, “Manchester United can confirm that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left his role as Manager.”

The former midfielder was in charge of the prominent club for 168 games, winning 91. When it comes to the English Premier League (EPL), he took charge of 127 matches, winning 59. Solskjær, however, couldn’t deliver a trophy for the club as they ended as runner-ups in the Europa League last season. United lost the final on penalty shootout to Spanish opposition Villareal. It was the closest they got to a trophy under Solskjaer's reign.

The Red Devils' form was dismal in recent times, winning just one of their last seven EPL games. A 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool was a hard pill to swallow while losses to Aston Villa, Manchester City at home made no favors for the 48-year-old. The game against Watford eventually turned out to be the final nail in the coffin as the team was dismantled 4-1 on the road. The nasty predicament eventually paved way for his exit.

There is no official word on who takes charge but a search for permanent manager is ongoing. Zinedine Zidane is favourite to take over while the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Brendon Rodgers are also in line.  United are next in action on Tuesday (November 23) as they take on Villareal on match day five of Champions League 2021-22. Their next EPL game is against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
