Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury, manager Ruben Amorim confirmed. The Dutch striker was forced off during United’s crushing 4-1 defeat against Newcastle United, making way for Rasmus Hojlund early in the second half.
Zirkzee, who joined United from Bologna, has found life in the Premier League challenging, managing just three goals across 32 league appearances. Despite his struggles in front of goal, he has remained a regular feature under Amorim, appearing in 31 of the team’s 32 league fixtures. Alongside Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, and Hojlund, Zirkzee has been one of the most consistent names on the team sheet.
Consistent presence despite struggles
While no Manchester United player has featured in every match this season, Zirkzee's consistency in appearances demonstrates Amorim’s faith in him. Only Fernandes has outscored the Dutch forward since Amorim took over in November, with six goals to his name.
Zirkzee’s injury is a significant setback for both the player and the club.
Joshua is out for the season. He will not play more this season; let's prepare him for the next one, Amorim confirmed. It’s always tough when a player sees his development interrupted like this.
Champions League race still a financial priority
Manchester United’s hopes of silverware now rest solely on the Europa League. With a disappointing domestic campaign nearing its end, Amorim acknowledged the financial and strategic importance of Champions League qualification.
I think it is more about the budget, he said. Champions League can change everything.
Amorim also commented on the demanding nature of competing in Europe while staying competitive in the Premier League. While returning to the Champions League remains a goal, missing out could offer the advantage of more time for team development.
It’s very hard to play the Champions League and the Premier League at the same time, he noted.
Eyes on the future amid historic low
Following last week's loss to Newcastle, United are set to finish with their lowest points tally in Premier League history. Their next fixture comes against Wolves after their Europa League quarter-final clash with Lyon.
With Zirkzee sidelined until the 2025–26 season, United must look to other squad members to step up as they aim to finish a turbulent season on a strong note.
