Mohamed Salah’s recent comments about not having to “fight every day” for his position sparked criticism from Hamann.

Egyptian star’s long-term role at Liverpool remains uncertain amid Saudi transfer rumors and new attacking signings.

Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann has openly criticized Mohamed Salah following the Reds star’s controversial remarks about his role at Anfield, sparking fresh debate over the Egyptian winger’s future amid ongoing Saudi Arabia transfer rumors.

Mohamed Salah’s explosive interview sparks backlash

Salah made international headlines on December 6 after Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Leeds United, when he addressed being benched for the third consecutive Premier League match. Speaking to reporters, Salah stated:

"How I see it now is like you throw Mo under the bus because he is the problem in the team now. But I don't think I am the problem. I have done so much for this club. The respect, I want to get. I don't have to go every day fighting for my position because I earned it. I am not bigger than anyone but I earned my position. It's football. It is what it is."

The comments came shortly after Mohamed Salah spent a month away at AFCON, where Egypt was eliminated in the semi-finals by Senegal, courtesy of a Sadio Mane goal.

His statements, perceived by some as questioning his daily commitment, immediately fueled speculation about his long-term role at Liverpool and potential moves abroad.

Hamann questions Salah’s dedication

Didi Hamann, reflecting on Salah’s interview, suggested that it may be in the best interest of both player and club to consider parting ways. Speaking to BetGoat, Hamann said:

"There have been poor performances without Salah as well, so it’s unfair to put it all on him. But Salah’s quote about not wanting to have to prove his worth every day struck me. That is exactly how it is. When you bring in players like Isak, Ekitike, and Wirtz, and you have Gakpo, you have to fight for your place regardless of the past. The main question is: is Salah prepared to sit on the bench for a few games if the manager feels someone else is better, even if it's a Champions League semi-final or final? If not, it’s probably best to part ways."

Hamann also questioned Mohamed Salah’s ability to consistently influence matches at the age of 32, noting his struggles to score from open play since Christmas last year.

Future uncertainty amid Saudi Transfer rumors

Salah’s remarks have intensified speculation that a move to the Saudi Pro League could be on the horizon. With the Premier League evolving and Liverpool bringing in new attacking talent like Isak, Ekitike, and Wirtz, the Egyptian forward’s position in the starting lineup could face increased competition, making Saudi Arabia or other destinations a realistic option.

As Mohamed Salah returns from AFCON, all eyes will be on how he reintegrates with Liverpool and whether he maintains the same hunger that has defined his Anfield career.
