Roma coach Jose Mourinho ran onto the pitch during a Seria A game between AC Milan and Roma to stop Tammy Abraham. The former Inter Milan manager approached his striker to take him away from a heated alteration that could have resulted in him getting sent off. The former Chelsea player was carrying a booking from an earlier offense and could have seen an early exit had Mourinho not approached.
The incident occurred in the 42nd minute when Roma were trailing 1-2 in the game. Goals from Olivier Giroud and Junior Messias had given Milan a 2-0 lead, but Abraham had cut short the advantage in the 40th minute to set up a thrilling contest. But having been booked in the 7th minute, he was a card away from getting sent off.
Mourinho smartly ran onto the pitch when the alternation took place in the 42nd minute to keep Abraham away from the incident. However, this was not enough for Roma as they went on to lose the contest 1-3. The loss left them six points behind fourth-place Atlanta and three behind Juventus, who sit fifth in the standings.
Rafael Leao secured the points before Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed a penalty in stoppage time. Roma though ended with nine men as Rick Karsdorp and Gianluca Mancini were sent off for two bookable offences. The win left Milan second in Serie A with 45 points while Roma occupy the seventh spot and share the same number of points with cross-city rivals Lazio, with 32 points each.
