Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that several key players are set to miss Sunday’s highly anticipated derby clash against Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium. The Spaniard admitted that injuries have left his squad stretched at a crucial point of the season, potentially impacting City’s preparations for one of the most significant fixtures on their calendar.
Speaking to reporters, Guardiola revealed that Omar Marmoush, Rayan Aït-Nouri, and Rayan Cherki are all unavailable, while defensive stalwart John Stones remains a major doubt.
“Omar is injured from Egypt [international duty]. John Stones as well is a doubt,” Guardiola said. “[It’s] not a big issue, but he’s a doubt for Sunday. Rayan Cherki [is also injured] but the rest are fine.”
Marmoush’s international setback
Marmoush picked up a knee injury while representing Egypt in their World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso earlier this week. The setback leaves City without one of their attacking options during a packed run of fixtures. Pep Guardiola admitted the medical team has yet to determine the full extent of the issue.
“Not yet. He has to have last tests. A few weeks, I think, before the next international break he will be ready,” Guardiola added, suggesting that the forward may return after the upcoming international window.
Stones adds to defensive concerns
The absence of John Stones could prove particularly costly, given his importance to City’s backline. Stones had already withdrawn from England’s squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia due to a muscular concern. Although Guardiola downplayed the severity of the issue, the timing of the injury casts doubt on his availability for the derby.
The potential loss of Stones comes with added significance as City prepare to face United’s frontline, making Pep Guardiola’s defensive selection a critical decision heading into Sunday’s showdown.
Additional injury woes
Guardiola also confirmed that summer signing Rayan Cherki will miss out due to injury. Meanwhile, midfielder Mateo Kovacic remains sidelined, further reducing the manager’s options in the middle of the park. With several players out, City’s depth will be tested as they aim to bounce back from recent disappointing results in the league.
High Stakes at the Etihad
The Manchester derby arrives at a pivotal time for City, who have endured a shaky start to their campaign. Pep Guardiola has emphasized the need for focus and resilience despite the injury setbacks, with United sitting just ahead of them in the league table.
While Guardiola expressed optimism about the squad’s ability to cope, the confirmed and potential absences mean his tactical approach will be closely scrutinized when the two rivals meet.
