Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé has revealed that a significant change in mentality has played a key role in turning around his initial struggles in the Spanish capital. After joining from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024, the French forward experienced a rocky start to his La Liga career but has recently rediscovered his world-class form.
Kylian Mbappé: overcoming early setbacks
Mbappé admitted that his first few months at Madrid were challenging, marked by inconsistent performances that left him grappling with self-doubt. However, the 26-year-old forward's mindset shifted as he focused on improving his game.
"You always have to be calm and focus on your game and what you can improve," Mbappé said in a press conference ahead of Madrid’s upcoming Champions League clash against RB Salzburg. “I knew that I could change the situation, and now the situation has changed."
This mental shift came after a difficult period at the end of 2024, during which Mbappé missed key penalties against both Liverpool and Athletic Bilbao, admitting at the time that he had “hit the bottom.”
Nonetheless, the French superstar remained determined to prove himself and vowed to overcome the obstacles in his way. With eight goals in his last 10 games across all competitions, he is now showing why he is regarded as one of the best in the world.
Turning Point for Kylian Mbappé
Despite the intense pressure of living up to the high expectations that come with playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world, Mbappé has silenced his critics. He now appears to have found his rhythm, both in Spain and on the European stage.
Reflecting on his transformation, he explained, "It was more of a mental thing… I knew I was good physically, good with the team, the group, but I had to do more and I knew it." He added, "I didn’t come to Madrid to play badly. Now it’s all changed, and I have to continue, because playing well for a month is good, but it’s easy."
Carlo Ancelotti: his adaptation period is over
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has been a strong advocate for Mbappé, offering him time to settle into his new surroundings. The Italian coach was particularly insistent on keeping Mbappé in a central role, even when early signs of tension with teammate Vinícius Júnior emerged. Ancelotti has consistently expressed his belief in Mbappé’s potential and supported him throughout his adaptation period.
“His adaptation period, which he obviously needed, because everyone needs it, is over,” said Ancelotti. “Where does Mbappé have to improve? Just in consistency… trying to make the moves that only he can make, as often as possible.”
Mbappé’s recent performances have been nothing short of spectacular, with his dazzling displays helping to propel Real Madrid to the top of La Liga. His brace against Las Palmas on Sunday, January 19th, demonstrated his growing confidence. With Vinícius set to return for the Champions League, the pairing of the two forwards could become a key weapon for Madrid’s bid to retain their European crown.
As Mbappé’s adaptation phase comes to an end, the French striker is now focused on maintaining his form and continuing his ascent to the top of the footballing world.
