Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski has created history and has overtaken Ferenc Puskas to become the first player with most goals in La Liga after turning 36. The iconic record was previously held by the Hungarian icon, who had scored 21 goals after turning 36. 

Robert Lewandowski breaks Ferenc Puskas record 

The former Bayern Munich forward scored two goals against Girona and helped Barcelona secure a crucial 4-1 victory on Sunday, March 30. The match was tied at 1-1 when Lewandowski netted his first goal in the 61st minute. Fermin Lopez was the one who had assisted Lewandowski. 

In the 77th minute, Lewandowski once again saw his name on the scoresheet as he extended the Catalan's lead to 3-1. It was Ferran Torres in the 86th minute with the match winning goal as the team leapfrogged Real Madrid in the points table. 

Before the match, Lewandowski had 20 goals to his name in the Spanish top-tier football after turning 36. With this, the former Borussia Dortmund star has now overtaken the Real Madrid legend. The Poland international has been in exceptional form this season as he has 38 goals and three assists to his name in the 42 appearances across all competitions. 

Not just this, he is also the top scorer in La Liga this season with 25 goals to his name. This is three more than second placed Kylian Mbappe. Lewandowski has even scored in eight out of last nine games for Barcelona. 

Barcelona star makes huge claim after their win over Girona

After winning 4-1 over Girona on Sunday, Barcelona's defender Eric Garcia has mentioned that every remaining game would be 'final' for the Catalans as they eye another La Liga title. Garcia started the match for Barcelona as a defensive midfielder, having a passing accuracy of 94% and even won two duels. 

After the match he said,

From now on, every match is a final.

Hansi Flick's team is currently on a high as they are on a nine game winning streak and their last defeat came in the month of December 2024. They have played 29 games and have 66 points, three ahead of second placed Real Madrid. 

On the other hand, Real Madrid have secured a total of 19 wins in the ongoing season. Barcelona will next take on Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals on Wednesday, April 2.
